Mieze Katz (born May 4, 1979, in East Berlin; real name Maria Mummert) is a German singer and frontwoman of the Berlin-based electropop music group Mia. In 1997, Mieze Katz founded a school band with guitarist Andi Ross (later Andy Penn), with whom she attended the John Lennon Gymnasium in Berlin. Their classmate Sarah Kuttner introduced them to bassist Robert Schütze and keyboardist Ingo Puls. Together with drummer Hannes Schulze, they formed a band that went through several name changes until they settled on their current name, MIA., derived from their earlier name, Me In Affairs.
